Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: My Fiancé and I are planning our honeymoon vacation for the end of January beginning of February 2005. We are interested in an all inclusive adventure getaway in Belize. Can you provide some suggestions?

A: Dipping its toe into the Caribbean Sea, Belize brims with thick mangrove forests that dot the high peaks and rolling valleys. A natural eco paradise, this is the land where the ancient Mayans set up kingdoms, which are still being unearthed today.

An independent state within the Commonwealth Nations, the lingua franca is English but you'll also hear interesting patois of Creole, Mayan and Spanish too. Be sure to peg on a visit to the archeological pride of Belize, Xunantunich also known as the "Stone Maiden" which was considered a ceremonial centre up to around 900AD when an earthquake ravaged the area.

Snap a pic of its El Castillo that rises high above the jungle. Over at Lamanai, this semi-excavated Mayan site is said to have over 60 structures including a small temple and ball court.

For honeymoon packages, there are several hotels/resorts you might wish to consider.

Here's a quick list: Sun Breeze Hotel (www.sunbreeze.net), Journey's End (toll-free 1-800-460-5665 or www.journeysendresort.com), Portofino Resort (www.portofinobelize.com), or Five Sisters Lodge (www.fivesisterslodge.com).

Lorraine Herrera of the Belize Tourism Board says there are two major tour operators in Canada that sell packages to Belize.

They are as follows: Total Vacations, 1501 Pelham St. N. Fonthill, ON L0S 1E0 Canada Tel: 800-769-4147 Email: davec@totalvacations.net and Global Connections, Ste. 408-1199 West Pender St. Vancouver, BC, Tel: 800-667-1221, Email: glblconx@istar.ca
