Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: At an office party recently we celebrated a favourite colleague’s retirement. They had these rum cakes from Cayman Islands. Someone mentioned we could purchase them. How can I place an order? Sorry I don’t know what kind of rum cake it was but it was very good.

A: Besides making a visit to the Cayman Islands where new Tortuga Rum Cake bakeries are popping up frequently (there’s a new one in Georgetown next to the cruise ship terminal), you can also dial a toll-free number 1-877-486-7884 for purchases. Should you decide to order more than one cake by phone the company reports it offers a 5 percent discount for purchases of eight or more 33oz rum cakes.

It seems the big secret behind the cake’s popularity rests in its key ingredient: a generous amount of premium five-year old, oak barrel aged Tortuga Gold Rum. “Each cake is individually hand-glazed with this rum before packaging. Our vacuum-sealing process ensures a shelf life of six months and will keep indefinitely if refrigerated or frozen,” notes the company’s web site.

Should you decide to visit the headquarters and state of the art bakery at Rum Cake Lane and Tortuga Rum Avenue, be prepared for free sample trays. For more details on this popular rum cake visit www.tortugarumcakes.com.
