Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: My fiancé and I would like to honeymoon somewhere south. I'm thinking of the Caribbean. Before I see a travel agent I wanted to know whether there are any special programs available.

A: Honeymoon packages are always popular. You're in luck as many of them have an emphasis on the Caribbean. Here's a quick rundown on a few. For starters, Barbados has its "Best of Barbados honeymoon" package with a shopping list of discounts such as 50 percent savings on roundtrip airfare (up to $300 per person), free one day car rental with a minimum four-day rental including special treats for honeymooners. As a sign of congratulations, newlyweds receive a wedding bonus with complimentary champagne, free breakfast in bed or room service on the first morning and a $50 Barbados gift voucher to use on the island. The "Best of Barbados" package is valid until December 14, 2002. For reservations, visit your nearest travel agent and for more details call 1.800.268.9122.

Billed as "the largest operator of luxury all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean," Sandals and Beaches Resorts are offering newlyweds who reserve in their third room category, a choice between a 16-piece set of Waterford Crystal and a 20 or 28-piece starter set of Wedgwood China as part of its WeddingMoon and Honeymoon Packages available through January 31, 2004. The retail value is up to $440US. A minimum six-night stay is required. For more information call 1.800.545.8283. Check http://www.honeymoons-in-paradise.com/, a popular web site for honeymoon planners or www.lovetripper.com.

Also, you may wish to check out the tons of hotels offering honeymoon bonuses from Signature Vacations. Their "Caribbean Classic" and "Fiesta Favorite" brochures are available at most travel agencies. Martha Chapman of Signature Vacations recommends prior to booking your trip, it's a good idea to sit down with your fiancé and decide all the "must-haves" and "nice-to-haves." "This will help everyone involved narrow their choices," says Chapman and adds, "The Caribbean is a large and very diverse part of the world--hopefully their honeymoon will be just their first visit!"
