Q: I'm a teacher who would like to save money when booking hotels. Do you have any suggestions?

A: If you're heading off for a few weeks to New York City, perhaps Paris or any other big city, home exchanges can be cheaper. The concept basically allows you to swap a home with another homeowner for an agreed period of time. Check a web site dedicated to academics.

If it's a hotel that you prefer, you'll find many hotels cater to business travellers during the week and as a result the rates generally are higher than compared to the weekend. Check to see if your preferred hotel offers reduced rates for advanced bookings. Sometimes hotels reward travellers who book 7-29 days prior to their intended arrival and offer reduced rates.

Lastly, organizations like the Canadian Automobile Association provide members with a list of companies offering member discounts to hotels and restaurants.
