Q: I was wondering if you could give any recommendations to hot spots for vacations in the beginning of October. My fiancée and I are planning our honeymoon. My concern is the time of year we're going. We don't want to take any chances by going to the Caribbean. Are there any other "hot" spots that we can consider? We plan to go for either 10 or 14 days. Hope you can help us out with some suggestions.

A: You've got the unexpected flooding of Europe coupled with a recent hurricane that swept across a tiny island in the South Pacific and all other sorts of weird weather patterns that have occured unexpectedly. Mother Nature will prevail anywhere at anytime.

However, there is certainly an interesting list of "hot spots" as you refer to them that traditionally have great weather in October, your chosen month of travel. You have nixed the Caribbean off your list but this destination that basks in the glow of sunshine year round continues to remain an all time favorite location for honeymooners.

My brother and sister-in-law planned a honeymoon during the same time as your scheduled special day and they chose Ocho Rios in Jamaica. They still reminisce about the fond memories. No strange weather then. A cousin of mine also wed in October but chose Aruba as their honeymoon destination. It was just the sort of place to soak in the sunrays and sip some cocktails along the poolside. She still talks about all the iguanas they met along the way.

How about Europe? There is Portugal's Algarve coast, sunny Spain or perhaps southern Italy. Meditteranean cruises are perfect introductions to all these countries including the gorgeous Greek islands. Not only is a cruise romantic but also it is an exciting way to see some breathtaking scenery with interesting day trips. So, you can say that you visited the ancient port city of Marseilles, had a café in Bonifacio, the oldest town in Corsica or sailed by the Italian riveria.

If you'd rather stay in one country, there are plenty of tours to Spain, Portugal, southern France or Greece. Once you've narrowed down the location, consult your preferred travel agent on cruise packages and tours.
