Q:My husband and I are planning a trip to the south of Italy for three weeks in September. Our plan is to visit Naples/Amalfi coast and a few days in Rome. The options for travel and accommodation in Italy are numerous. Can you point me in the right direction?

A: First off, relax. It's important not to get overwhelmed with all the information out there. Before venturing into a travel agency, it's good to get reacquainted with your likes and dislikes. Draft up a quick list of things you like to do.

Are you someone who wants a fully escorted tour, maybe you wish to have the knowledge of a tour guide but also want to have plenty of free time for relaxation or independent exploration. Or do you prefer to be completely independent once at your destination but want to have all the advanced bookings done before traveling?

Also, consider the mode of preferred transportation once you have reached your selected destination. Do you wish to see Italy by car, bus, train or perhaps by taking a cruise?

After getting in touch with your preferred modes of travel & approach to travel, you are now in a better position to consider budget and locations.

Italy is always a favorite stomping ground for travelers and happens to be among my favorite destinations. Since you mentioned southern Italy as your vacation destination, rest assured that there are plenty of tour operators with trips here.

Here's a quick list to help get you started: Cosmos Vacations has a 16-day Southern Italy and Sicily tour with stops at historic Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius, Capri, Palermo, Naples to name a few. Go Ahead Vacations (1-800-590-1170) has a 9-day Naples, Sorrento and Roe tour with 3 days in Naples, 4 days in Sorrento, and 2 days in Rome. Trafalgar Tours has an 11-day "Best of Sicily" tour touring Rome, Isle of Capri, Sorrento, Taormina, Syracuse, Agrigento & Palermo. Signature Vacations has its "Italy City Packs" tours which includes three nights accommodation, a city tour plus an extra optional visit on Signature's "Naples & Pompeii Excursion".

See your travel agent for more details.
