Romantic Montreal

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: My boyfriend wants to take me somewhere romantic to celebrate our first anniversary of going out together. I was thinking of spending a weekend in Montreal. I know there are probably many things to do. Hopefully you could give me an introduction and let me know where I can get brochures.

A: Montreal is an easy 1-hour flight from Toronto. For hotel accommodations, the list is long since Montreal has over 25,000 hotel rooms from which to choose. With over 60 theatre stages, 171 movie screens and over 40 festivals such as Just For Laughs, the Grand Prix and the Jazz Festival, you'll quickly discover how this bilingual city is referred to as "festival town." But, it is also known for romance.

This is the city of l'amour where dynamic silverscreen couple Liz Taylor and Richard Burton tied the knot and where John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their famous love-in during the 60's.

A shopper's paradise packed with chic boutiques and ultra mode artisans, you can certainly snag some great finds along famous Ste. Catherine Street where nearly 1,200 shops cut a swath between St. Denis and Guy Streets or descend into the bowels of Montreal's Underground City with its catacomb of shops and restaurants.
