Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: Can you play golf around New York City?

A: You sure can. These days you can find golf courses at virtually any destination. When we talk about the Big Apple, there are golf courses and driving ranges in all five boroughs. While not many people associate Gotham with golf, it could just be one of the better kept secrets about the place.

The NYC and Company Office reports seven of New York City’s golf courses have recently undergone a two-year, $45 US million renovation to add new landscaping, modernize clubhouses, restaurant facilities and reservation technology enhancements.

In the Bronx, the Split Rock Golf Course has been upgraded to a tournament-quality course including new tees and fairways, as well as two new water features. The course is expected to attract high-profile golf tournaments in New York City. Over on Staten Island, improvements have been completed at the LaTourette Golf Course which includes a 10,000-square-foot event facility with an all-star catering team hailing from some of New York City’s top restaurants.

Plans are also underway to create a golf course in the Bronx. Designed by famed golfer Jack Nicklaus, it will be located at Ferry Point Park in the southeast Bronx and is set to open in 2008.

Insiders here report it will evoke Ireland's classic, links-style courses and will be the crown jewel of New York City’s golf scene. Here’s a list of tee-off places around NYC:

In Brooklyn, the Dyker Beach Golf Club (718-225-4653, www.americangolf.com) offers spectacular views of the Verrazzano Bridge and New York Harbor from the fairways. Recent renovations at this course include a restored clubhouse and a new dining facility.

In Queens, The Clearview Golf Club (718-225-4653, www.americangolf.com) is considered New York’s most played 18-hole course with open fairways that provide a forgiving, yet challenging round. At Chelsea Piers, tee off high above the Hudson River at the all-weather facility known as the Golf Club at Chelsea Piers (212-336-6400, www.chelseapiers.com).
