Q: Lately the CBC has been promoting Canada’s new wonders but I was more interested in learning about the other Seven Wonders of the World competition. Could you let me know the dates for this? I won’t be able to travel until the fall and if anything is nearby I just might travel to see one of them.

A: Let the countdown begin and be sure to sharpen your pencil to mark the date for this exciting competition. And if you haven’t already voted be sure to make your vote count by selecting your favourite destination or landmark. Dubbed the “New Seven Wonders of the World,” this competition will be announced in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7, 2007.

Fitting for the theme, organizers cleverly chose the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year of 2000. Not only that, Lisbon also is known as the city of seven hills. And to boot, many consider seven as their lucky number.

For more details and to vote today, click on and choose seven among the 21 finalists listed. Currently millions of people throughout the world are voting by telephone or via the Internet.

The competition was started back in 2001 when the New7Wonders Foundation was created by the Swiss Bernard Weber and supported by Unesco. Some of the candidates are the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Cristo-Rei, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

So if all goes well, you just might want to book a trip to visit the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York City or Chichen Itza in Mexico.
