Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: How can I purchase cheap Broadway tickets?

A: There are a few ways. Broadway’s famous TKTS stand on Times Square has been selling same day tickets at discount prices to the big Broadway hits for years. You might be familiar with such big show sell-out hits like The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera and Kiss of the Spider Woman which starred Canada’s own Brent Carver.

The TKTS kiosk at Times Square is temporarily relocated just outside the New York Marriott Marquis on West 46th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. Hours of operation are Mon-Sat 3-8pm; Wed and Sat 11am-2pm; Sun 11am-closing.

There’s also a TKTS booth at South Street Seaport's Pier 17. Hours of operation are Mon-Sat,11am-6pm and Sun, 11am-3:30pm. If planning on using the same day TKTS kiosk, here are a few tips: Arrive at the TKTS booth early for ticket purchases to the more popular shows. They sell out fast. Have cash or traveler's checks ready as no plastic is accepted. Remember there’s a $3 surcharge per ticket.

In addition to the same day TKTS kiosks our electronically wired world makes it easier as theatre lovers can purchase discounted tickets online in advance.

Ticketmaster.com, BroadwayBox.com and Theatermania.com also provide discounts usually around 25 to 50 percent off the ticket price. Be sure to include the show’s promo code which is available on the site. For instance BroadwayBox.com currently has tickets valued at $55-$75US for the production, Hairspray with the code BOX10.

Besides online bookings, sometimes some shows also sell “Rush Tickets” ideal for the last-minute crowd.
