Q: I saw or heard somewhere that the world tourism organization has changed its name. Could you please confirm?

A: While the World Tourism Organization has been known by this title, this leading international tourism body has recently changed its English acronymn to UNWTO. According to the organization, this change was due to the frequent confusion between two WTOs – World Tourism Organization and the Geneva-based World Trade Organization.

The UN General Assembly approved to add the letters UN (for United Nations) to the start of the agency’s acronym. "But since the transformation of the World Tourism Organization into a specialized agency of the UN, strengthening our relationship to the United Nations system, it was felt the best solution was to refer to our own Organization as UNWTO," said Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli in a press release.
