Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: I booked a vacation for two (me and my wife) this past March for a one-week trip to Varadero Cuba. I was quoted $800 per person from March 7-14, 2004 and agreed to pay by Visa over the phone. A confirmation was supposed to be faxed to me soon after. But it never was. The next morning we picked up our tickets only to find the dates were wrong. I was very disappointed and was told nothing could be done about it at the time. As you can imagine, we were shocked and very disappointed with this error, which could have easily been avoided had we only received a confirmation fax immediately after reserving with them. How can I resolve this matter?

A: The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) is an organization mandated by the Ontario Government to administer the Ontario Travel Industry Act, which governs approximately 3,000 travel retailers and travel wholesalers registered in Ontario.

I contacted Michael Pepper, president and CEO of TICO who says that travel agencies in Ontario have strict requirements to provide an invoice with the itinerary at the time of sale. "If this was not provided prior to the travel dates I suggest that you contact TICO for assistance," he says.

You can reach TICO at 905 624-6241 ext 232 and speak to Josie Pereira for more assistance.
