Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: With the price of gas and airline tickets skyrocketing, my husband and I are really wondering what the next best thing would be to take our daughter on a vacation. We really enjoy reading the suggestions you give and hope you could provide us with an option.

A: I went aboard VIA Rail Canada this winter with mom and highly recommend a train trip. Not only will you be able to take in the sights and scenery in a leisurely manner but you’ll also be guaranteed some great bonding time. We sat back in our roomy seats, read, chatted and watched the scenery change before us.

Right now, VIA Rail Canada has some great savings you can check out. I came across their Kids Travel Free, a summer savings program now in effect until September 15, 2008. Those over 18 purchasing a senior, student (18+), youth (18 to 25), or adult-fare ticket in VIA's Comfort Class (economy) can bring a child ages 2-11 for free. Children under two years always travel free as long as they do not occupy a seat.

Meanwhile for adults, VIA Rail Canada currently is offering a selection of summer savings programs. Inquire about VIA’s Corridorpass. This pass provides 10 days of travel in the busy Windsor to Québec City Corridor and is available for VIA’s comfort or VIA 1 seating. Prices start at $314 for adults in Comfort Class.

For more information visit viarail.ca/corridorpass. For other summer discounts visit viarail.ca/offers or call (888) VIA-Rail (842-7245).
