Q&A

By Ilona Kauremszky

Q: My nephew who is aged 7 loves to see large ships. We recently moved to Niagara Falls. Could you let us know where we can view some nearby?

A: How about the Welland Canal? Drop by Lock 3 on 1932 Government Road in St. Catharines for some ship gazing as you watch them from a viewing platform. On the day of your planned visit, call ahead and ask for the daily ship schedule. You can even coordinate this visit with a stop at the Welland Canal Centre and St. Catharines Museum located at the same place.

For ship scheduling call 905-984-8880 or 1-800-305-5134. Currently the museum is showcasing a temporary exhibit on Vikings. Called “The Vikings: Master Mariner Traders, Colonists and Artisans,” the exhibit is on loan from the Museum of Manitoba and concludes on May 25th.

The permanent exhibit includes a neat look at the old zipper factory in St. Catharines called the “Lightning Fastener Company,” the Welland Canal, the history of spas in St. Catharines, black history “Follow the North Star” and more. For more details visit them online at www.stcatharineslock3museum.ca.
